What are page margins?

In the designer you will see the Canvas (entire white page), Bleed Area, Red Dotted Line and Green Dotted Line.

  • The canvas is the size of the finished product plus a bleed area.
  • The bleed area is the space between the red dotted line and the edge of the canvas. The bleed area is for when a colour or image is wanted to the edge of the final physical print. Bleed ensures no unsightly white trim lines when finished. It is called bleed as images ‘bleed’ past the red dotted trim/cut line.
  • The red dotted line is the trim/cut line. When finished this red line is the edge of the physical page. Anything between this line and the edge of the canvas (bleed area) will be cut off and will not show on the final prints.
  • The green line is the safe margin. Anything inside of this green box will not be trimmed off the final print. Anything between the red and green lines may be too close to the edge of the printed product and possibly get trimmed/cut off.
